New hope through education

“Now I don’t need to be worried about her anymore! I have one burden less to bear now that she has been given the chance to go to school”, Nonita’s grandfather says with tear-filled eyes. Nonita is one of the 200 children in our sponsorship program in Kolkata. Without her sponsor she wouldn’t have had the opportunity to go to school.

Nonita was abandoned by her parents and she now lives with her grandmother, grandfather and her aunt. Her grandparents are both over 6o years and only Nonita’s grandmother is capable of working outside of the home. Everyday she works at a building site, carrying sand and cement. Her salary is just enough for the little family to survive, but not enough to pay for costs for school and clothes.

It is her grandfather who takes care of Sujita. He takes her to school and he picks her up when the school day is over. Today Nonita says that she is too tired to walk and insists for her grandfather to carry her. “She is a little lazy”, he says with a smile, lifts her up on his shoulder and starts the walk home.

Behind Agape School in Chingrighata there’s an area that looks like a little village with narrow alleys and small wooden sheds. One of the sheds is Nonita’s home. Just inside the door, next to the only bed in the shed, there’s a small fireplace on the cement floor where the Chai (Indian tea) is soon prepared. The house has two rooms, approx 17 m2  altogether.

While we are waiting for the tea, Nonita’s grandfather expresses his gratitude yet again. He tells us that their circumstances are difficult, but that they now have hope for Nonita’s future.
