| Medical Team to Haiti Early on Tuesday morning, 19th January, a medical team sent by Word of Life will set out for Haiti, recently devastated by a massive earthquake, and whose people are now suffering the catastrophic consequences of the disaster. Their objective is to assist with minor operations, care for the injured and administer antibiotics and pain-killers.
The team of nine includes surgeons, emergency-care nursing staff, anaesthetists and support workers many of whom have had previous experience in situations like this, for example in the earthquake in Pakistan and the 2004 tsunami. They will be travelling via Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic and will take a bus on to Rigo, just outside the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, devastated by the ‘quake. The city lies in ruins and people still lie buried under the rubble.
A clinic and a base for all the emergency work is being built at Rigo under the auspices of The Star of Hope organisation, Word of Life’s on-site partner. The clinic aims to offer help to as many as possible through minor operations, dealing with injuries, administration of antibiotics, pain-killers and whatever else is needed to make the situation easier for the victims of the disaster. Star of Hope and Word of Life are taking joint responsibility for the distribution of hospital materials and required medicines, which in the main comprise anaesthetics, hypodermics, antibiotics and analgesics. Helped by Star of Hope, everything will be freighted out on Monday, free-of-charge to Haiti by the Swedish travel organiser, Fritidsresor.
Please pray for the victims of the disaster in Haiti and for the team and their work, that aid will be available for many.
